Secondary pairing in gapless color-superconducting quark matter

چکیده
We calculate secondary pairing in a model of a color superconductor with a quadratic gapless dispersion relation for the quasiquarks of the primary pairing. Our model mimics the physics of the sector of blue up and red strange quarks in gapless color-flavorlocked quark matter. The secondary pairing opens up a gap ∆s in the quark spectrum, and we confirm Hong’s prediction that in typical secondary channels ∆s ∝ G 2 s for coupling strength Gs. This shows that the large density of states of the quadratically gapless mode greatly enhances the secondary pairing over the standard BCS result ∆ ∝ exp(−const/G). In all of the secondary channels that we analyzed we find that the secondary gap, even with this enhancement, is from ten to hundreds of times smaller than the primary gap at reasonable values of the secondary coupling, indicating that secondary pairing does not generically resolve the magnetic instability of the gapless phase.

It has been suggested that quark matter might exist inside central regions of compact stars. At sufficiently high baryon density, cold quark matter is expected to be in a color superconducting (CSC) state. This is one of the reasons why the color superconductivity has been intensively studied. Bulk matter in the compact stars must be in β-equilibrium and be electrically and color neutral. The e...

Electric and color neutral solutions, and the critical conditions for the formation of gapless color superconductors, are investigated in K condensed color-flavor locked quark matter for nonzero strange quark mass. We show that as the strange quark mass increases, gapless modes for up-strange quark pairing occur first, followed by downstrange quark pairing. The behavior of the gaps, the dispers...
متن کاملGapless color superconducting phases of dense quark matter
Sufficiently cold and dense baryonic matter is expected to be a color superconductor. The corresponding ground state is characterized by a condensate of Cooper pairs made of quarks. Since the latter carry color charges, the SU(3)c color gauge group of strong interactions is partially or completely broken through the Anderson-Higgs mechanism. At asymptotic densities, this phenomenon was studied ...

We address the phase structure of color superconducting quark matter at high quark density. Under the electric and color neutrality conditions there appear various phases as a result of the Fermi surface mismatch among different quark flavors induced by finite strange quark mass; the color-flavor locked (CFL) phase where quarks are all energy gapped, the u-quark superconducting (uSC) phase wher...

We calculate the Debye and Meissner masses and investigate chromomagnetic instability associated with the gapless color superconducting phase changing the strange quark mass Ms and the temperature T . Based on the analytical study, we develop a computational procedure to derive the screening masses numerically from curvatures of the thermodynamic potential. When the temperature is zero, from ou...
